Capital markets regulator Sebi slapped Rs 94.5 lakh penalty on 17 entities for indulging in fraudulent trade practices in illiquid stock options segment on the BSE. The regulator, during the course of investigation between April 2015 and September 2015, found that 81.38 per cent of all the trades executed in the stock options segment involved reversal of buy and sell positions by the clients and counter-parties in a contract on the same day. These entities were among those "whose reversal trades involved squaring off transactions with significant difference in sell value and buy value of the transactions," Sebi said in similarly worded separate orders on Friday. It further said trades of the entities are non-genuine as they are not executed in normal course of trading, lack basic trading rationale, lead to misleading appearance of trading in terms of generation of artificial volumes, and are hence deceptive & manipulative. The commerce ministry Thursday launched a blockchain-based coffee e-marketplace to help farmers integrate with markets so that they can realise fair prices for the commodity. The blockchain will also reduce the number of layers between coffee growers and buyers and help farmers double their income, the ministry said in a statement. "This pilot project will help integrate the farmers with markets in a transparent manner and lead to realisation of fair price for the coffee producer," Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan said in the statement. It said that India is the only country in the world where entire coffee is grown under shade, handpicked and sun dried. "Indian coffee is highly valued in the world market and sold as premium coffees. The share of farmers in the final returns from coffee is very meagre," it added. Stock markets may witness volatile sessions this week amid derivatives expiry, even as some investors are likely to remain on the sidelines ahead of the general elections beginning next month, say analysts. A Japanese court sentenced the former high-flying creator of the MtGox bitcoin exchange to a suspended jail sentence of two and a half years Friday after finding him guilty of data manipulation. The Tokyo District Court convicted Mark Karpeles, a 33-year-old computer whizz from France, for tampering with computer data but acquitted him over charges of embezzling millions from client accounts. The sentence was suspended for four years. In a summary of the ruling, the court said Karpeles had "harmed the users' trust greatly" by manipulating data and "abused his expertise as an IT engineer and his position and authority". Prosecutors had claimed that Karpeles had pocketed some 341 million yen (USD 3 million) of client's money and splashed it on a lavish lifestyle. They called for him to serve 10 years behind bars. Public sector firms across half of the states along with the banking and financial sector are driving blockchain adoption in the country, a report by IT industry body Nasscom said Tuesday. "The public sector has driven blockchain-based projects with nearly half the Indian states involved to address different elements of citizen service delivery," Nasscom said in a statement. It said the state governments are also ensuring a progressive approach to impart a conducive framework for start-ups and niche service providers to participate in these initiatives. According to the report, more than 40 blockchain initiatives are currently being executed by public sector companies with 92 per cent projects in pilot phase and 8 per cent in production phase.
