India warms up to the oldest workouts

When Shaju R , the chief technology officer at DCUBE Ai, a Thiruvananthapuram-based company providing software solutions, felt a creeping sense of burnout, he did not turn to ChatGPT for answers. The 45-year-old looked to something ancient and rooted in his land—the martial art form called kalaripayattu.Shaju, who has spent over two decades in the high-pressure world of IT, says long hours, poor posture and stress had all taken a toll on him, physically and mentally. Gym did not seem inviting any longer, thanks to recurring back pain and a frustrating plateau in fitness. HUL warns of near-flat Q2 as GST changes bite

Hindustan Unilever, India's largest consumer goods company, on Friday said it expects near-flat to low single-digit growth in the September quarter due to temporary disruptions across its distribution network caused by the goods and service tax (GST) rate cuts. The maker of Dove shampoo and Lux soap said the lowered taxes support long-term consumption though it has faced a transitory impact in the form of disruptions at distributors and retailers for clearing existing inventories with pre-GST prices."This has resulted in postponement of ordering in anticipation of receiving new stocks with updated prices and lower orders across the overall portfolio as consumers delayed their pantry buying. This has led to a short-term impact on sales for the company in September," HUL said in a stock exchange filing. "Given our existing pipeline inventory in the channels, we expect this impact to continue into October as well." The revamped GST regime rolled out from September 2...

Why Flipkart can't do a PhonePe

What if two companies born under the same roof, nurtured by the same parent and scaling in the same Indian market end up taking radically different IPO paths? That's the paradox of PhonePe and Flipkart. Both Flipkart and PhonePe are majority-owned by Walmart. From being a subsidiary of Flipkart - which acquired the digital payments company in 2016 - PhonePe was spun off as a separate company in December 2022. But PhonePe is sprinting toward a public listing, while Flipkart, once the poster kid of India's startup boom, is still figuring out its IPO playbook. This divergence isn't just about two separate companies, but it also reveals deeper lessons about India's capital markets, strategic positioning and the maturing tech ecosystem.India is at an inflection point. Its consumer internet giants - Paytm, Zomato, Nykaa, Policybazaar - have tested   public markets with mixed results. Now comes the second wave: fintechs, ecommerce platforms and SaaS companies that are better ca...

GST 2.0: Hotel chains keep room rates stable

US may hit entire ICC with sanctions soon

The United States is considering imposing sanctions as soon as this week against the entire International Criminal Court, putting the court's day-to-day operations in jeopardy in retaliation for investigations of suspected Israeli war crimes. Washington has already imposed targeted sanctions on several prosecutors and judges at the court, but naming the court itself in the sanctions list would be a major escalation. Six sources with knowledge of the matter, all speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive diplomatic issue that has not been publicly announced, said a decision on such "entity sanctions" was expected soon. A source said court officials had already held emergency internal meetings to discuss the impact of potential blanket sanctions. Two other sources said meetings had also been held of court member state diplomats. One U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, confirmed that entity-wide sanctions were be...

Auto firms brace for festive season demand surge

After the lull of Shraadh-typically marked by muted footfalls and weak sales-auto retailers are pinning hopes on the festive season that begins Monday with Navratri. While such seasonal swings are familiar, this year is unusual. The government's sweeping tax cuts under GST 2.0, announced more than two weeks before its implementation on Monday, coincided with the Shraadh fortnight, bringing sales to a near standstill as potential buyers waited for the new tax rates to take effect and the inauspicious period to end.About 15% of annual auto industry sales are generated during the 42-day festive period, spanning Navratri to 15 days past Dhanteras (which includes Bhai Dooj). This makes the current weeks critical for dealers looking to recover lost momentum. Dealership checks in Mumbai's central-eastern suburbs just two days before GST 2.0 took effect, underscored the slowdown. At a Tata Motors showroom, three of five customer-engagement tables were occupied, and families walked in s...

GST cut plus incentive add fireworks to sales

It may be the perfect time to make the big purchase-be it the dream car, the latest motorcycle, or large-screen LED televisions, with consumer goods manufacturers offering attractive incremental incentives, beyond the price benefits accruing from goods and services tax (GST) rate cuts, attempting to sharply revitalise sales this festive season.Several senior industry executives ET spoke to said the price incentives on cars, SUVs, and sedans are currently at an all-time high of 12-15% of a vehicle's ex-showroom price, more than double the 5-7% offered typically. In consumer durables too, companies and retailers are offering steep discounts to speedily liquidate unsold stocks after consumers deferred purchases in the past few weeks, anticipating lower prices after the revised GST rates are rolled out. "The average discount in TV category will be 25-26% in the first four days of the festive sales to clear out maximum inventory after which it will fall to 12-15% like every year,...

Hotels woo guests with themed dining

Following staycations and workations (work from anywhere) that changed the way hotels get business after the Covid pandemic, the concept of 'eatcations' is reshaping the way travellers plan their getaways, and food is increasingly becoming the centrepiece of the holiday package, hoteliers said.CGH Earth said it has collaborated with Tamil scholars to create specialised cuisine from the Sangam era for Aatrupaduthal, the new al fresco dining space at the heritage hotel chain's Mantra Koodam property in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. In keeping with the culinary traditions of the Sangam era, ingredients such as modern-day spices and additives not historically available have been deliberately excluded at the restaurant. The chain plans to add 100 rooms to its portfolio for the next two to three years, with the growth coming from its small hotels (less than 10 rooms) under the Saha vertical, and incorporating local culinary experiences will be key to its expansion, managing director Mi...

India Inc turn to non-bank routes for funding

Mumbai: Corporate India is increasingly tapping non-banking channels to meet its funding requirements, with nearly half of the total resources raised in FY25 coming from equity markets, bonds, and loans from non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed. The total flow of financial resources to the corporate sector rose to Rs 35 lakh crore in FY25, marking a modest 3% increase over the previous year. However, the composition of this funding reflects a shift away from traditional bank credit, signalling a broader economic slowdown. Of the Rs 35 lakh crore raised, Rs 17.1 lakh crore — or nearly 49% —came from non-bank channels such as corporate bonds, NBFC loans, equity issuances and foreign direct investment. By contrast, demand for bank credit declined 14% to Rs 17.9 lakh crore. Bankers attribute this shift to the strong performance of equity markets, which encouraged companies to raise capital through share issuances rather than debt. Non-financial c...

Profit-taking in consumption sectors won't end GST rally: Analysts

Mumbai: A round of profit-taking in consumption-oriented sectors on Thursday may not signal the end of the rally that began after the Prime Minister first hinted at Goods and Services (GST) cuts in his Independence Day speech on August 15. Analysts say the rally in autos, consumer durables, FMCG and metals still has legs, though they caution that gains from here may not be one-sided and would be more stock-driven.Among sector indices, the Nifty Auto index ended 0.9% higher after gaining as much as 3.7% earlier on Thursday. Nifty FMCG gained 0.2%, while Consumer Durables ended almost flat. These indices had gained between 2.4% and 3.2% in the past week."The profit booking observed in GST-exempt sectors on Thursday was largely anticipated and does not signify the end of the rally in this space," said Amit Khurana, head of equities at Dolat Capital Market. Russian oil shifts to China as tariffs hit India

Russia's crude shipments rebounded, with China picking up the slack after US President Donald Trump's punitive tariffs on India choked exports to the South Asian nation.Trump's doubling of US import tariffs on goods from India to 50%, imposed as punishment for its persistent buying of Russian oil, appears to be hitting the flow of Moscow's crude to the nation despite the defiance of the government in New Delhi. The amount of crude on tankers heading to India stuck below 1.3 million barrels a day in the four-weeks to August 31, down by about one-third from the recent peak seen in March. Even if all the cargoes on ships yet to show a destination ends up in India, flows would still be down by about 550,000 barrels a day, or 28%, from the March peak.Meanwhile, the amount of crude heading to China has moved in the opposite direction, reaching a five-month high of 1.28 million barrels a day.Overall weekly crude shipments from Russian ports jumped by 770,000 barrels a day to a ...
