Rlys to explore rail-road tunnel projects

The Indian Railways will investigate the feasibility of accommodating both railway and vehicular traffic in tunnels for which alignments are yet to be approved, officials familiar with the matter told ET.The Centre believes this will enable better use of underground space, particularly in densely populated or geographically constrained areas, they said. The Railway Board, according to the officials, has requested compliance from all executing agencies within the railways during the alignment finalisation and detailed project report (DPR) stages for the rail and road tunnel projects.Proposals for these projects will be submitted to a joint working group (JWG) consisting of representatives from the ministry of roads and the railways.124325392"These measures are expected to reduce land acquisition costs and streamline construction costs," a senior official told ET, pointing out that harmonising planning, design, construction and operational strategies for both modes of transport in a shared corridor has multiple benefits. The officials cited earlier said shared infrastructure can optimise investment, reduce environmental impact and enhance connectivity. "This will also avoid redundant excavation efforts," one of the officials said.Recommendations of the JWG will be applicable to all tunnel projects. "Executing agencies concerned will mandatorily need the JWG's nod before proceeding with the alignment report for each project requiring a tunnel," the official said. The focus, according to the officials, is on promoting integrated planning and cost-effective implementation of tunnel projects with overlapping or adjacent road and rail alignments. This year, the government has earmarked ₹11.21 lakh crore for spending on infrastructure. The railway ministry has allocated ₹32,235.24 crore for new tracks and another ₹2,169 crore for bridges, tunnels and approaches. As part of the 'Viksit Bharat' plan, the roads ministry aims to build 50,000 km of access-controlled highways over the next 10-12 years involving an investment of more than ₹20 lakh crore.
